Valdez grinned at Mercedes question, and for a moment felt tempted to point out that he could promise no such thing, but at the last second he decided not to; he was so very content lying there with her by his side, that he decided - please don't question this logic, to him this makes perfect sense - she deserved a lie.

"Fine," he replied in a soft voice, giving her a small sideways kiss, "anything for you."

"Thanks," Mercedes smiled already suspecting him tell her whatever she wanted to hear. She gave him a slight kiss on the lips and rested her head on his chest, listening silently to his breathing and heartbeat.
