It was early one evening and Mercedes was sitting along in the bedroom. It bothered her that the children were afraid because of her and distant herself from them because of that. She was sitting in a chair staring at the ceiling trying to think of something that would solve her mortality problem without having to turn into a vampire. That was when the all too familiar scent of sulphur entered the room, Mercedes let out a sigh expecting Valdez to come through the flaming gateway.
“Valdez I am in no mood for another lecture about how something is wrong with me,” she said not even bothering to turn her gaze from the ceiling.
“Isn’t it a good thing then that I am neither Valdez nor here to lecture you?” an unfamiliar voice asked her.
Immediately tensed Mercedes looked at the demon that had come in through the hellgate and sat up straighter in her chair. The demon had horns which told her that he was part of the strongest demons that hell had to offer. She swallowed uncertain about what he would want from her. Valdez had Lilith’s protections against demons, but she didn’t and at scared her very much right now.
“Don’t worry I’m not here to harm you,” the demon said as if he had read her mind, “I’m here to offer you a way out of your immortality problem.”
Mercedes got up out of the chair, hating the fact that she was actually interested in what he had to say. The demon smiled at her and walked over to her which made her back away until her back hit the wardrobe. The demon just kept walking over to her though until he was within her personal space. He stroke her cheek and with that also put a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
“What do you want from me?” she asked incapable of keeping her fear from her voice.
“All I want is to over you a way out of your immortality,” the demon answered sweetly, “the man upstairs might no longer want you to be part of his employees, but you are more than welcome with us. Just think about it. You and Valdez will finally be equal, well not in strength, I’m afraid your age difference will never allow that. But you would finally be of the same species and won’t have to think about what the other can and can’t handle because you will have the same strengths and weaknesses.”
Mercedes looked down. She couldn’t deny that it was a tempting offer, nor that she hadn’t been thinking about it herself ever since she had lost her angel status and her religion. But she knew demons too well to know that such an offer was never for free. The only way she would be capable of becoming a demon without having to make a deal with one was if she would actually get Valdez crazy enough to convince Lilith for her.
“Let’s say for arguments sake that I would accept your offer,” she said, trying to keep her face and voice neutral, “what would be catch. Aka what do you want from me for turning me into a demon?”
The demon grinned at her and leaned in a little, their noses almost touching.
“I like the way you think,” he answered, “and I only want one simple thing from you. I know that you are married, but it’s not like Valdez doesn’t have fun with Lilith as well. So you don’t have to feel guilty about it…”
“Just get to the point,” Mercedes interrupted him, afraid to know what he was hinting at and actually just wanting to have him say it.
“Sex,” the demon answered, “just one time, one night, no strings attached. Don’t worry I’ll be gentle and I’ll make sure you’ll enjoy yourself. And before you start yelling at me, just think about it. Put it into perspective. You just need to spend one night with me and you will be capable of spending all eternity with your husband and children. What do you say?”
"I..."
